The Census of India 2011, conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India (ORGI), recorded a total Jain population of 4,451,753, approximately 44.5 lakh, representing 0.37% of India's total population of 1.21 billion.

Key Facts from Census 2011
Four states account for over 70% of all Jains in India. Maharashtra (31.46%), Rajasthan (13.97%), Gujarat (13.02%), and Madhya Pradesh (12.74%) together hold 71.19% of India's recorded Jain population.
Jains are the most urbanised religious community in India. 79.7% of India's recorded Jain population lives in urban areas, the highest urbanisation rate of any religious group in Census 2011.
Highest literacy rate of any religious community. The Jain community recorded a literacy rate of 94.88% in Census 2011, the highest among all religious groups.
Slowest recorded population growth. Between 2001 and 2011, the recorded Jain population grew by 5.4% against a national average of 17.7%, the slowest decadal growth rate of any major religious community.
Share declined despite population growth. The Jain share of India's population fell from 0.41% in 2001 to 0.37% in 2011, even though the absolute population number increased.
